MARCH IS COLORECTAL CANCER AWARENESS MONTH

Dr. Howard M. Hack, Board-Certified Gastroenterologist and the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy would like the public to know that March has been designated as National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month..

Dr. Hack, who has recently opened an office in Las Vegas, also has offices in Los Angeles and Kingman, Arizona, where his medical team provides advanced and personalized care in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of conditions affecting the function and disorders of the GI system, which includes the colon, esophagus, stomach, pancreas, gallbladder, liver, and small intestines.

A graduate of the Washington University School of Medicine, Dr. Hack completed his medical training at the Cleveland Clinic, Barnes Hospital (Washington University), and did his gastroenterology training at Stanford. He has performed over 30,000 endoscopic procedures, including the use of advanced techniques fro the detection and removal of colon polyps. In addition, Dr. Hack has performed over 700 wireless capsule endoscopies and actively works with colleagues at Stanford, Cedars-Sinai Medical Center and mayo Clinic.

The American Society for Gasrointestinal Endoscopy states that colorectal cancer is the third most common cancer diagnosed in men and women in the United States, excluding skin cancer and is the third leading cause of cancer deaths in the U.S. It was believed to be the cause of close to 50,000 deaths in 2009. The good news is that this number has decreased from 2005, when approximately 56,000 died from colorectal cancer. In fact, the death rate from colorectal cancer has been dropping for the past 15 years, due to the probability of the earlier detection of polyps before they develop into cancers.

According to Dr. Hack, this number can be lowered even more with public awareness involving the application of timely and proper colon cancer screening. Ninety percent of people whose colorectal cancer is found at an early stage are alive five years after diagnosis.

Dr. Hack states that colorectal cancer is often present in people without symptoms and that is why screening for colon cancer is so important. Beginning at age 50, both men and women at average risk for developing colorectal cancer should have a screening colonoscopy and then repeat the procedure every ten years. Colonoscopy, when performed by a well-trained endoscopist, gastroenterologist or surgeon, is the most effective screening test for colon cancer because it allows for the detection and removal of precancerous polyps before they turn into cancer. It is important to know, reminds Dr. Hack, that 85 percent of colorectal cancers occur in people with no family history of colon cancer.

Society of Permanent Cosmetic Professionals to Celebrate

20 Year Anniversary at Convention in Las Vegas

Society of Permanent Cosmetic Professionals-SPCP holds 19th Annual Convention & Trade Show for Permanent Makeup Cosmetic Tattoo Professionals at Flamingo Las Vegas, March 6-8, 2010

SPCP Convention 2010 will mark the twenty year anniversary of the largest professional organization within permanent cosmetics and cosmetic tattooing. As always since the beginning, the future of permanent cosmetics is the focus of the Society of Permanent Cosmetic Professionals.

The SPCP is excited to return to the beautifully renovated Flamingo Las Vegas this year, located within the famous Las Vegas 'hot spots' of shopping, dining, and entertainment.

This year's lineup of respected speakers and topics include Hector Guiza, whose workshop on how to use Power Point for brilliant business enhancement is the result of much demand and wanting more after his debut in Philly at Conference last September. This workshop is limited in size so sign up early and bring your laptop! Each person will actually build their own Power Point presentation from start to finish.

The Vendor Booths will open early again this year to provide fantastic shopping opportunities for the early birds who want the best deals. So be sure to 'hit the vendor room' on Friday night for early shopping as well as the now famous Silent Auction.

The convention is preceded by the two day Train the Trainer Course and Bloodborne Pathogens Class. This class, offered by the SPCP on bloodborne pathogens is singularly a most important class as it is presented specifically to the permanent cosmetic profession.

Saturday afternoon will be abuzz with SPCP Vendors presenting their products and services. In a profession which advances as quickly as permanent makeup, no professional will want to miss what's new and who's who.

Saturday evening will be spent as a family reunion, bringing together some of the original 'old hands' from back-in-the-day with the new blood who will take our profession into the future. Some retirees will be back to celebrate this very proud twenty year anniversary and will be the social event of the decade for sure!

A very special lineup of speakers has been chosen for this momentous event and will be conducting informative lectures Sunday and Monday. Some highlights of this year's presentations include:

~the always popular Susan Preston on how to protect your business from today's overly litigious problems. Her speech is called "Stiletto Heels and Aging Attorneys; Sample Claims and How to Minimize Problems". Ms. Preston is well known for her interjection of humor and is always a welcome return speaker.

~Edward Zimmerman, MD will present updates on current in-office, cosmetic technologies including laser liposuction, fractional laser resurfacing, and bundling technologies for optimal outcomes. He provides a bit of basic science and a review of rational use of the electromagnetic spectrum. Dr. Zimmerman discusses how permanent cosmetics may affect, or be affected by these procedures. Other topics address issues that permanent cosmetic professionals may face, such as Vitiligo.

~Lana Duke will speak on "The Colors of Our Personalities" and will provide tools for a better understanding of color 'personality' to ensure pleasing results.

~An SPCP First - “Pigment Panel,” hosted by Debra Guastella, CPCP, color experts Elizabeth Finch-Howell, CPCP, Mary Jane Haake, CPCP, Alexis Lawson, Pat Shibley-Gauthier, CPCP, and Darlene Story - discuss subject matters that are important to our understanding of pigments as well as answer your important questions. This is an intense two hour session and is sure to be a landmark presentation.

~Jane Adler, CPCP will present her vast knowledge of the manual method. Machine users as well always find great information in Jane's presentations. With her many years of experience, she is a valuable asset to operators of all modalities. (video presentation)

~Val Glover Hovan from Australia referred to as the "Grande Dame" of single needle work will awe the audience with her video of a single needle full lip procedure.

~Kate Ciampi, CPCP will share tips and techniques on utilizing free media to increase business in a presentation called “Tweeting by Day, Wall Writing by Night – The Impact of Social Media.” This will be sure to turn us all into permanent cosmetic bloggers! (PR Web)

PR Plus Named Las Vegas/St. George, Utah Markets Agency of Record by Smashburger

Using traditional and grassroots outreach, PR Plus to add sizzle to the better burger concept in Las Vegas and St. George, Utah markets

Smashburger, a fast-casual “better burger” restaurant, announced today Las Vegas-based PR Plus as the agency of record for the Las Vegas and St. George, Utah areas.

Locals will be able to experience the flavor when Smashburger’s first Las Vegas location arrives this spring. Subsequent Smashburger locations in Las Vegas and St. George, Utah will follow. These locations are owned and managed by SB Las Vegas LLC.

Named for the cooking method used to create the perfect burger, Smashburgers start with a one-third or half-pound ball of 100-percent Angus beef—fresh, not frozen—smashed, seared and seasoned on a flat grill. Served on a butter-toasted artisan bun and topped with a selection of real cheeses, the freshest produce and top-quality condiments.

The restaurant also serves delicious Smashchicken, Smashdogs and Smashsalads, with sides like veggie frites and rosemary and garlic-seasoned Smashfries. Diners can also enjoy Häagen-Dazs shakes, root beer floats, beer and wine with their meal.

“The Smashburger concept is so creative, fresh and innovative, we just had to work with its team to spread the burger magic to Vegas and St. George,” said Alissa Kelly, partner and chief operating officer of PR Plus.

“We are pleased to partner with PR Plus as Smashburger enters the Las Vegas and St, George, Utah markets,” says Smashburger President Scott Crane. “PR Plus has a great track record and will help us in our quest to become every city’s favorite burger place.” PR Web

The Treasures of Egypt exhibit celebrates its grand opening

At  the Las Vegas Natural History Museum

Exhibit features replicas of King Tut’s Tomb in a new Egyptian Pavilion

The Las Vegas Natural History Museum in downtown Las Vegas is celebrating a milestone thousands years in the making.  On Saturday, Jan. 30, 2010, the Museum will open a new permanent exhibit called The Treasures of Egypt, which features nearly 500 reproduced artifacts including the tomb of the young Pharaoh Tutankhamun.

The exhibit, located in the museum’s new 4000-square-foot Egyptian Pavilion expansion, provides a glimpse into the ancient past of Egyptian civilization.  It features replicas generously donated by MGM MIRAGE that were formerly on display in the King Tut Museum & Tomb inside the Luxor Las Vegas, including the world-famous guardian statues, King Tut’s sarcophagus and an array of statues, vases, baskets and pottery.  The Museum was able to recreate the tomb of King Tut as discovered by Howard Carter in the Valley of the Kings in Egypt in 1922.  This unique replica of the actual tomb is the only known exhibit of its kind outside of Egypt.

The Las Vegas Natural History Museum is located at 900 North Las Vegas Boulevard.  Admission is $10 for adults; $8 for students, seniors and military; $5 for children ages 3-11.  Children age 2 and under are free.  Admission includes access to the entire Museum, including the new exhibit.  Hours are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily.

The Treasures of Egypt exhibit is designed to recreate Ancient Egypt, beginning with a sculptured stone sentinel that comes to life, introduces the expedition, and sweeps visitors from the Mojave Desert to Egypt’s Sahara Desert.  Visitors learn the importance of the Nile River to the Egyptian society through state-of-the-art interactive devices that allow one to take a virtual trip down the Nile to learn about its many riches.

A recreated Egyptian village and marketplace allows one to experience the life of ancient Egyptians from gathering water, grinding wheat, using ancient carpenter’s tools, and bartering for food and supplies.

Visitors then explore how archeologists in the early 20th Century unearthed some of Egypt’s most renowned treasures, including the Tomb of Tutankhamun. The exhibit includes a trip through the realistic entrance to Tut’s Tomb and the opportunity to view artifact recreations of best-known pieces including the Golden Throne, chariots, the Golden Shrine and outer sarcophagus.  These replicas are one of only two sets that were authorized by the Egyptian Ministry of Antiquities.  The other set resides in Luxor, Egypt while the actual artifacts remain entombed in the Valley of the Kings and the Egyptian Museum in Cairo.

Visitors have the unique opportunity to explore an Egyptian mummy by using state-of-the-art technology that allows the user to “scan” a mummy replica in real time and view actual medical imaging taken of a real mummy.

“The generosity of MGM MIRAGE, the Engelstad Family and State of Nevada will benefit our community and the thousands of children and families who visit the Museum annually for many years to come,” said Marilyn Gillespie, executive director of the 18-year-old Las Vegas Natural History Museum.   “We are eternally grateful to these entities, as well as to our many long-time supporters, for their commitment to the Museum and to Las Vegas.”

The MGM MIRAGE donation is valued at approximately $3 million. The Engelstad Family Foundation of Las Vegas generously committed two gifts that total $1.5 million to the Museum in order to make the exhibit a reality.  Additional funding came from a grant from the State of Nevada.

The team that designed this new exhibit includes local museum exhibit professionals, artisans, craftspeople, the Museum staff and respected exhibit designers and fabricators from all over the country.

Please visit www.lvnhm.org for more information and a complimentary two-for-one coupon.  The museum can also be reached by calling 702-384-3466.

Velvet Knights Drum & Bugle Corp. to Perform In Las Vegas

The Velvet Knights Drum and Bugle Corps of Pasadena, CA will perform in Las Vegas on February 22, 2010 for President William Jefferson Clinton. The former president will be addressing the national convention of the Green Dot Corporation at the Rio Hotel for the afternoon session.

The Velvet Knights was contacted by Las Vegas Marching Arts who is also responsible for fielding a DCI style drum and bugle corps in 2012. "We wanted the best of the west!' said President and founder Randy N. Warner of Las Vegas. After volunteering for VK for several years while residing in Southern CA Warner knows of the exceptional values and learning experience the VKYAO organization brings to all the young participants

Velvet Knights had carved out a place on the drum corps stage as the "Clown Princes of Drum Corps" and "The Harlem Globe Trotters of DCI," entertaining audiences all over the United States and Canada and in countries abroad. VK remained a DCI finalist through 1990 before falling short in 1991, but returned to the top 12 for their last Finals appearance in 1992.

VK is a brand new competing corps, but our tradition dates back to the origin of our namesake, the Velvet Knights of Anaheim, California.  When the original group left the performance field, many thought that they'd seen the last of VK, with its fan-friendly shows, and general wackiness.

Let's just say there's some unfinished business.  If you saw us in 2009, you know what we're talking about...we're back in a big way!

The Hard Rock Cafe on the Strip is featuring local musicians

Las Vegas has a new live music venue on the Strip that promotes local artists. Las Vegas residents have been waiting for another venue that supports local musical talent. When the Las Vegas Strip locations promote local artists the entire community is elevated to a new level of well being.

Andrew Courtney is one of the few promoters in Vegas with an original thought. "How many bands do we need playing the same tired material?" We don't need to walk into three places in the same night and hear three bands playing the same songs... No one likes "Brick House" or "Journey" that much. Andrew is among a select group of people who know their customers and consistently book stuff that works with their venue. Kathi at the Cannery comes to mind as do some of the folks at Boyd. These people are looking way beyond quarterly numbers and creatively pursuing things like social networking and getting locals to become active in moving their properties into the future. (Peter at the Hilton not only thinks outside the box he is tearing the box to pieces.) There are also a hand full of exceptional promoters presenting memorable live music because they love it like Roxie Amoroso, Michael Soli, Brian Saliba, James Woodbridge, Josh Figg, Joe Love, J. Quigley, Jason Sturtsman, Patrick Trout etc.

These are the people that are going to put live music back into Las Vegas' "Ultra" Lounges. These places are beautiful and will make awesome live music venues for A-list acts and local openers. Imagine going back to the days of Dean Martin and Frank Sinatra when one would go from Casino to Casino to support their friends' shows. Memories are created by human interaction with the entertainers, not by mingling with a random DJ and some celebrity "host" sitting in a booth behind three layers of security who stays for 30 minutes while middle-aged children pay $500 for a $30 bottle of booze.

"With so many Vegas nightclubs in questionable health, casinos are increasingly turning to live music to save the day. Live music is one of the few things left that people still seem to be willing to peel their ass off their couch for, so promoters are booking singer-songwriter showcases at bars, intimate acoustic performances in restaurant lounges and bangin’ mini-concerts in mega-clubs alongside the DJs." - Xania Woodman

Las Vegas has a wealth of riches when it comes to talent. Let's showcase it!

Jacobs Challenge Wrestling Championships  Jan. 9-10 in Mesquite, Nevada

Several hundred youth wrestlers will converge on Mesquite, Nev. two for days of top-notch youth wrestling

In his continuing effort to bring athletic events to the CasaBlanca Resort Casino, hotel sporting events manager Christian Adderson has teamed with Ed Gutierrez of Denver, Colo., for the Jacobs Challenge World Championships youth wrestling event to be presented Jan. 9-10 in the hotel’s Special Event Center.

The first of its kind gathering will include youth wrestlers from Nevada, Idaho, Arizona, Utah, Colorado, California, New Mexico, Washington and Oregon competing in various weight classes on eight mats for competitors ranging from kindergarten through ninth grade. The promoting body Rocky Mountain Nationals Events (RMNE Events) has been in business for ten years.

With 30 dates planned in 2010, The RMNE Series is considered the premier youth wrestling series in the country. The series is expected to bring together more than 15,000 along with 60,000 competitors during the season.

The idea of presenting youth wrestling at the CasaBlanca came when Adderson met Gutierrez at a convention in Denver. One thing led to another and the facilities combined with the close proximity to surrounding states turned an idea into reality.

“We have presented youth wrestling events all over the country in states like Florida, Michigan, Wisconsin, Washington and Oregon,” explained Gutierrez, whose business also includes dedicated help from wife of 26 years, Julie, who handles the accounting elements of the events; along with sons Adam and Josh, both directors. “Mesquite offers so much from the facilities to the hotel rooms and a close proximity to other cities.”

Gutierrez said wrestling offers life lessons to youth adding “The biggest lesson to be learned from wrestling is that you get out of it what you put into it. It’s just as in life. Hard work and perseverance have their reward.

“This is a first-time event, but we really see it becoming the place to be in future years. And with airline flights being as cheap as they are now during a tough economy not to mention the affordability of staying in Mesquite, this event has everything going for it. Considering that this is the first event on our schedule, it provides the competitors with a chance to gauge the rest of their season.

“We have sure received a lot of inquiries about the Mesquite event and we are considering this to be a long-term event.”

Other RMN events are presented at world-class facilities such as the Denver Coliseum, Disney’s Wide World of Sports Complex (Orlando), Idaho Center (Boise), Magness Arena (Denver), Pan American Center (Las Cruces, N.M.), Pepsi Center (Denver), Selland Arena and the Toyota Center (Prescott).

Adderson said the wrestling event is yet another example of a continued push to bring special events to the CasaBlanca and Mesquite.

“Since Labor Day, we have had an endless run of special events including the Smokin’ in Mesquite BBQ competition, the Mesquite Marathon; the Teacher Games along with the Nevada Senior Open and the Nevada Open golf tournaments,” said Adderson. “About the time we conclude one event, we’re on to another one and the wrestling tournament is an example of that.”

Maverick Helicopters Announces the Twilight Dream Wedding Package

Maverick Helicopters is unveiling an enchanting new wedding package to usher in 2010. Dubbed the "Twilight Dream," it offers couples a spellbinding matrimonial experience over the world-famous Las Vegas Strip in their own private and luxurious ECO-Star helicopter.

Maverick Helicopters (http://www.maverickhelicopter.com) is unveiling an enchanting new wedding package to usher in 2010. Dubbed the "Twilight Dream," it offers couples a spellbinding matrimonial experience over the world-famous Las Vegas Strip in their own private and luxurious ECO-Star helicopter.

Needless to say, it's the time of day that makes this new package so unique. The helicopter will depart at the twilight hour--the magical period that takes place between daylight and darkness, when there's a soft, glowing light in the sky as the sun is sinking below the horizon.

"Our new package makes the idea of a helicopter wedding even more enticing. Twilight is a romantic time of day--so it's perfect for such a romantic commitment," explained Leanne Semenza, the in-house wedding coordinator at Maverick Helicopters. "With the panoramic views and the spectacular skyline of the Strip, you'll have blissful memories to last a lifetime."

The Twilight Dream wedding package features two options. With the standard option, couples are flown directly to the Strip to take their vows as the lights of the Las Vegas are beginning to come alive. They'll make a double loop above the city's famous megaresorts and Downtown's Fremont Street Experience. With the extended option, couples receive an additional 30 minutes of flight time. They initially set out for Lake Mead and Hoover Dam, where they'll be enraptured by the breathtaking views at dusk. Then, they head back toward Las Vegas, where they'll be wed and enjoy a similar 1.5-loop sightseeing journey over the Strip.

"I expect the Twilight Dream wedding package to be very popular," said Semenza, who has years of experience hosting amazing weddings. "Since the helicopter departs at twilight, we can take photos inside the comfort of your private limousine in the sky during the ceremony. Plus, the photos of the scenery at twilight will be simply incredible."

The idyllic Twilight Dream wedding package includes limousine transfer to and from Maverick Helicopters' terminal, a minister for a religious or civil ceremony, a professional photographer, a bridal bouquet and matching boutonniere, and a champagne toast. Prices range from $1,799 to $2,399.

"The Twilight Dream wedding package is designed with magic, charm and elegance," added Semenza. "We pride ourselves in taking care of all the details so couples can delight in each moment of their big day."

The Twilight Dream wedding package will be available beginning January 1, 2010. For further details or to reserve a date, contact Leanne Semenza by phone at (702) 948-1325. You can also visit http://www.maverickhelicopter.com.
