Las Vegas Detective Shines Light on Pandering in New True Crime Book

Las Vegas police Det. Chris Baughman’s first book, “Off the Street,” will be released this Thursday, Sept. 1. “Off the Street” chronicles Baughman and his team’s investigation and the eventual take down of a notorious pimp, who is now serving time in prison for his crimes. The book's message: prostitution is not a victimless crime.

Las Vegas police Det. Chris Baughman’s first book, “Off the Street,” was released on Sept. 1.

Baughman didn’t set out to be a police detective, but as a kid growing up in the rougher parts of Las Vegas, he saw crimes no child should experience. Now, as a member of an elite squad of detectives, Baughman tracks down men who traffic women and lure them into lives of prostitution, abuse and hopelessness. In “Off the Street,” Baughman tells the story of the case that two years ago launched the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department’s Pandering Investigation Team, which already has been the inspiration for a “CSI: Crime Scene Investigation” episode as well as a story on “Dateline NBC.”

Las Vegas is a hub and one of the top destinations in the country for human trafficking, and the Pandering Investigation Team tracks, arrests and fights to prosecute some of Clark County’s most violent, yet wealthy criminals, including pimps and others involved in the trafficking of human lives for monetary gain.

“Our nation is under fire. There is a war going on beneath the surface of our city. The prize? The lives and futures of our daughters,” Baughman said. “These men trick, lie and coerce women into lives of prostitution through promises of love and wealth. We as a society have been led to believe that many of the women involved in this lifestyle make a conscious decision to do so. This couldn't be further from the truth. In this world violence and degradation are commonplace. The women have become no more than commodities.”

Originally titled “Anomaly,” “Off the Street” chronicles Baughman and his team’s investigation and the eventual take down of a notorious pimp who is now serving time in prison for his crimes. Just like his move into law enforcement, Baughman’s recent hobby as an author turned professional by chance.

Baughman was urged to write a book about his experiences and attended a writer’s conference in La Jolla, Calif. for guidance. An agent saw his work, decided to represent him – unheard of for an inexperienced author – and found Behler Publications, a nationwide publisher. Since then, Baughman has received national attention.

“It’s overwhelming, the amount of attention the book is generating already,” Baughman said. “But at the same time, I’m excited for everyone to read about what goes on in every major city across the country and raise awareness. Although Las Vegas is the Mecca of human trafficking, it isn’t a problem unique to this city. These women are your neighbors and sisters and daughters. We’re running out of time. Every day, another woman gets sucked into this mess.”

A public launch party for the book will take place in the middle of downtown Vegas (at the Downtown Cocktail Room, 111 Las Vegas Blvd. S.) from 5-7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 2.

Published by Behler Publications, the book retails for $15.95 and will be available in trade paperback. PRWebb

Paragliding and Powered Paragliding Training Now Available in

Las Vegas and Southern Nevada Area

Las Vegas Powered Paragliding LLC provides a combination of Paragliding services that can't be found anywhere else in southern Nevada. Las Vegas Powered Paragliding LLC trained pilots are some of the best and safest paraglider/powered paraglider pilots and have the most fun possible in the sport.

PPG “ The Ageless Sport”
With proper training and good equipment powered paragliding is considered the safest form of personal aviation ever devised. Las Vegas Powered Paragliding LLC only use instructors that trained under the best in the world so this quality of expertise is passed on to their students. All of Las Vegas Powered Paragliding LLC instructors was trained by a World Champion. Las Vegas Powered Paragliding LLC also use the best, certified and safest equipment available to train on.

  • No FAA license is required;
  • Most people learn to fly in about a week;
  • You can foot launch or fly wheels;
  • Easily transported in vehicle.

Powered Paragliding is sometimes known as Para motoring and it is a form of ultralight aviation. The pilot wears a small motor on his/her back called a Paramotor and energetically runs into the air producing lift from a paraglider wing. Powered paragliding differs from powered parachuting in that powered paragliders use an extremely efficient wing which aids the lifting process. Las Vegas Powered Paragliding LLC innovative wing allows the small and light motor to be carried on the pilot’s back for a running foot launch but does necessitate a more experienced and competent handling.

The ever-increasing popularity of the sport of powered paragliding is probably due to the low, slow flowing capacity and the totally free and open-air sensation that the pilot does not experience with a conventional light aircraft. Compact and lightweight portability and low and affordable costs of the maintenance of the equipment are major advantages for Las Vegas Powered Paragliding LLC and its powered paragliding machine’s enthusiastic sporting participants. The Paramotor weighs anywhere between forty-five and eighty pounds, easily enabling the pilot to wear and support it on his/her back during the lift-off phase. With an enthusiastic but brief run the wing will lift the motor and the harnessed pilot successively.

After this simple take-off the pilot eases him/herself into the seat that was folded during the launch and comfortably sits back while suspended below the inflated paraglider wing. Utilizing the brake “toggles” in each hand together with a hand-held throttle control of the powered paraglider is simplistically available. Las Vegas Powered Paragliding LLC has a powered paraglider that can fly at speeds between fifteen and forty-five miles per hour. Altitudes of eighteen thousand feet can be attained but just about all flying is kept at below five hundred feet above ground level.

In several countries, including the United States, this powered paragliding sport is minimally regulated. No license or specific course of training is essential either in the United States or the United Kingdom. Receiving instruction and advice from a seasoned and professional powered paragliding instructor is highly recommended by Las Vegas Powered Paragliding LLC. Those countries that do require authentic certification often solicit the use of non-governmental ultralight organizations for this purpose. A pilot of a powered paragliding machine could invest between one to four weeks getting through the syllabus required by most organizations.

With special gear it is possible to take “on board” of a second person but few countries, including the United States, would countenance this tandem flying without some form of instruction and certification. Lightweight carts or “trikes” can be mounted on powered paragliders for the further enjoyment of those pilots who prefer not to foot-launch or for those who for some reason are unable to. Research has produced statistics to show that powered paragliding is safer than riding a motorcycle. Some pilots even carry a spare parachute that is designed to open from as little as fifty feet. Powered paragliding has made possible the means for almost anyone to follow the age-old dream of man to fly. (PR WEB)

Local Entrepreneur Opens New Business

AAA Wood Refinishing LLC opens floor renewal franchise

Add one more business to the local tax rolls and get ready for wood floors and cabinets with the “wow” factor.  An N-Hance franchise has opened in the Las Vegas Metroplex.  AAA Wood Refinishing LLC has opened a new N-Hance service, a floor and wood cabinet renewal business, to serve homeowners, property manager’s interior designers and decorators as well as commercial businesses in the Southern Nevada area.

“After listening to the needs of my customers over the years, I realized the region needed an alternative to expensive and messy floor refinishing. There were also limited choices for renewing cabinets. In most cases, cabinets can simply be renewed and updated, and do not need to be replaced,” notes Tommie Jackson, owner of AAA Wood Refinishing LLC and the N-Hance Franchise and a long time employer of Home Depot. “I chose to open an N-Hance franchise because of its unique offering in the market, and the demand we had been witnessing for years.”

“N-Hance addresses an important need in Las Vegas Metroplex,” notes Tommie.  “We’re able to renew cabinets and floors without the mess, waste and expense of replacement. N-Hance is a remarkable system and has been successful in markets across the country. I’m excited to bring it to Las Vegas.”

The new franchise offers wood floor and cabinet renewal and produces like-new luster without the waste, mess, overwhelming chemicals or expense of traditional sanding and refinishing.  Using new technology, the N-Hance process thoroughly cleans the surface, removes old coatings, repairs damaged areas and applies an elegant, durable and protective finish. The whole process is done with biodegradable material which represents a “green” business.  Most projects can be completed within one to two days.

For most property and home owners, the replacement of floors and cabinets is unnecessary.  Over the years, dirt build-up and age-discolored finishes make wood look flat and lifeless.  The N-Hance process thoroughly cleans the surface, removes old coatings, repairs damaged areas and applies an elegant, durable and protective finish.

AAA Wood Refinishing LLC is a local business of Las Vegas and can be reached at 702-463-1595 or aaawoodrefinishing@gmail.com.  You may also visit their website at www.nhance.com/aaawoodrefinishing to learn more about the process.

First Mesquite Jazz Festival scheduled July 15-17 about 80 miles north of Las Vegas

In the city known for inaugural events, a chance meeting leads to what is expected to be yet another successful event attracting music enthusiasts to the CasaBlanca Resort

Another first will converge on Mesquite when the inaugural Mesquite Jazz Festival is presented on the grounds of the CasaBlanca Resort July 15-17.

Scheduled to perform at the event will be four groups including Reynolds Brothers Rhythm Rascals of Santa Ana, Calif., Titanic, a Los Angeles-based group; Uptown Lowdown Jazz Band of Seattle, Wash; and Sally’s Jazznuts.

Activities will kick off Friday, July 15 at 7 p.m. in the CasaBlanca Showroom.

Twenty Years of Jazz by Rose Marie Barr begins the schedule Saturday, July 16 at 10 a.m.

Whether playing a hot ragtime number or a sultry love ballad, Rose Marie Barr is at home on the piano. Her performance itinerary includes all pop standards of the 1920's thru the 1950's.

Barr, who is from Washington state and married to the band’s leader, Bert Barr, does wedding ceremonies and receptions, fashion shows, background music of all kinds, senior living residences and plays piano with the Uptown Bands which includes Ragtime, Dixieland and Swing music. She is a versatile pianist and taught music for many years.

Barr will return later Saturday to do an additional 20 years with a performance covering the next two decades. Jammers, who like to play alongside the bands, will be invited to bring their axe to perform with the various groups.

The grand finale is scheduled for Sunday, July 17 with the Gospel Hour led by Marilyn Keller.

Each band will follow Keller in what is expected to last until about noon.

“This all came together because I’m a member of Group Leaders of America,” explained producer Sally McKay, who lives in Oceanside, Calif. “We were in Palm Springs at one of the trade shows and I ran into Petra Jones of the CasaBlanca Resort. Petra explained that the CasaBlanca had been looking for a jazz festival anyway, so we got to talking.

“From there, we came up with a date for the Mesquite Jazz Festival. We’re going to offer flavorings of Dixieland, Big Band and Swing in what promises to be three days of fun. There will be dancing, venues for listening and there also will be someone there from the Glass Slipper which has dance shoes and apparel.

“Ladies, be sure to get your parasols out and bring them with you. There will be a Bourbon Street Parade much like you find in New Orleans although it will be inside.”

McKay added that followers of the event are expected to journey from Oregon, California, Arizona, Washington and across the border in Canada.

Further information can be found by visiting mesquitejazz.com or jazznuts.com; or by calling McKay 760-754-7081.

One, two and three-day festival passes are available starting at $25 and may be purchased at http://www.mesquitejazz.com.

City National Bank, The Public Education Foundation and
Clark County READS Enhance Library at Cannon Junior High School

School will receive $15,000 worth of new nonfiction books

City National Bank through its Reading is The way
up® literacy program, The Public Education Foundation and its literacy initiative, Clark
County READS, are replacing outdated books in the Helen C. Cannon Junior High School
library with more than 700 new nonfiction books.

City National Bank has donated $10,000 – with the Public Education Foundation
contributing $5,000 – to the Clark County READS Library Enhancement Program for this
project. Prior to ordering books for a library, Clark County READS and the Foundation
perform an analysis of the library’s collection to determine which new nonfiction books will
have the greatest impact on the library and its students and which outdated nonfiction books
will be removed. The average copyright date of Cannon’s nonfiction collection was 1989
before the donation.

To recognize the donation, an hour-long celebration will be held inside Cannon’s
library on Wednesday, May 11 at 9 a.m. Cannon Junior High is located at 5850 Euclid Ave
in Las Vegas.

“This is a wonderful and much needed program Clark County READS is providing
to our schools and community,” said Larry Charlton, Nevada regional executive of City
National Bank. “Our partnership with The Public Education Foundation is a great example
of the public and private sectors working together to provide our children with a better
education and a brighter future through literacy.”

The Clark County READS Library Enhancement Program utilizes donations
from various businesses and organizations to update resources for students in Clark
County School District (CCSD) libraries.

“This is the second time City National Bank has enhanced a Clark County School
District school library with new nonfiction books,” said Curtis Jones, director of Clark
County READS. “City National Bank’s commitment to education is impacting the lives of
thousands of students one book at a time.”

City National Bank enhanced the library at the Lincoln-Edison Elementary School
in 2010.

Since Clark County READS was established in 2001, almost $1.3 million worth
of new nonfiction books have been placed in 98 CCSD libraries. This translates into more
than 80,000 new nonfiction books, benefiting more than 85,000 students. Clark County
READS manages seven literacy programs, all providing quality literacy programs to
children and families in Clark County.

Ninth Annual Mesquite Amateur Expected to Draw Hundreds May 30-June 3

Golfers from all over the country travel thousands of miles to play in a fun tournament highlighted by evening dinner parties, great times and some of the nation's finest golf courses.

The Mesquite Amateur golf tournament enters its ninth year May 30-June 3 promising to attract hundreds of competitors from several states in what has become one of the top events of its kind in the country.

Presented by the Golf Mesquite Nevada and Mesquite Resort Association, the event is open to all amateur golfers who have a current USGA (or equivalent golf association) handicap index as of the close of entries.
The Mesquite Amateur will be played at six courses including the CasaBlanca, The Palms, The Chase at Coyote Springs, Falcon Ridge, The Canyons at the Oasis and the Palmer at the Oasis.

The 2010 Mesquite Amateur was captured by Salt Lake City competitor and Fed Ex driver Chad Young who fired a championship round net 64 to wrap up the title at the CasaBlanca Golf Club.

The top female in last year’s tournament was Naarah Turpen, a resident of Tucson, Ariz., who fired a net 65 in the championship round.

Golfers continue to travel long distances to compete in the Mesquite Amateur. When Young wrapped up his championship last year, he probably spoke for many others who love the event.

“There are a lot of things that bring me back,” said Young, who has competed in every one of the tournaments. “The people you meet here are fantastic and so are the volunteers.”
Young and his wife, Holly, compete in couples tournaments several times a year.
The Mesquite Amateur is the second largest golf tournament in the country behind the World Am in Myrtle Beach, S.C. Among the others who would not miss the event is Pensacola, Fla., resident Peach Waller, who will travel 1,956 miles to participate in the tournament.

The Mesquite Amateur has been the high point of Waller’s golfing year for the past five years.
“The first time I heard about the Mesquite Amateur I was in Myrtle Beach, S.C. playing in the World Am,” recalls the 61 year-old Waller, who earned a degree in radio-TV-film from the University of Georgia in 1971. “We were sitting around having a beer after the day’s round and some of the guys were talking about how much fun the desert was. I asked somebody what was so good about Mesquite and they told you don’t have to pack your umbrella, your rain gear and there is not a hurricane sitting off the coast of Nevada threatening to cancel the tournament.”

Key to the success of the Mesquite Amateur is the many activities that accompany the gathering.
Nightly gatherings are presented in the CasaBlanca Event Center where the food, refreshments and film of each day’s golf keeps everyone enlightened.

The Mesquite Amateur has grown to become one of the largest of its kind in the country. A long list of related guest activities this year will include a Mediterranean mix off with Bruschetta and Bellini; a spa luncheon; the crowd favorite wine tasting at Katherine’s Steakhouse; the annual no-limit Texas Hold Em poker tournament at the Eureka Resort; and the “Cigars Under the Stars” at the CasaBlanca swimming pool.
